Indonesian Nickel Smelters Owned by Foreign Entities, Investment Minister Says

Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia admitted that nickel smelters in Indonesia are still owned by foreign entities.
The President asserted that smelters are a stepping stone and future foundation to elevate Indonesia as a developed nation.
President Jokowi believes that Indonesia will become a developed country when the integration of smelters in the country is fully completed.

relaxation of mineral concentrate exports has forced 11
smelters to stop their operations
Member of the Indonesian Nickel Miner Association confirmed
that there will be 26 fully operational nickel smelters by
the end of 2017.
Smelter companies urged the government to cancel raw mineral
export relaxation.
Investors who want to develop mineral reserves in Central
Kalimantan are being reminded to also build smelters.
The minister is scheduled to visit the location of the
smelters in Pomako and Amamapare as well as hydro power
plants for the smelters in Urumuka.
Mimika Regent Eltius Omaleng said that the local government
had prepared land for the location of the smelters in the
region.
The government has allowed PT Freeport Indonesia to build its
smelters in two different locations.
The construction process of smelters in Indonesia has reached 80 percent.
The smelter must be built in Papua to boost its economy,
particularly its infrastructure.
"If smelters are developed, export customs are zero," says Minister Hatta.
The Energy ministry is preparing an agreement scheme for
Freeport to build its smelter as mandated by the Law of Mineral
and Coal.
PLN official confirmed that providing electricity
infrastructures for the smelters would take at least 500 days
or two years.
Freeport is conducting feasibility test to build smelters in
Gresik and Papua.
Energy Ministry official says the companies will likely begin supplying in 2016 or
2017.
These three companies will supply 300,000 tons of alumina per
year each to Inalum's aluminum smelter.
Tin smelters in top exporter Indonesia are likely to continue a stoppage of ingot supplies into November, as they try to push benchmark prices above $25,000 a tonne, an industry official said.
The United Arab Emirates plans to invest $9.5 billion in aluminium smelters in Indonesias Kalimantan region, Indonesias ambassador to the UAE said on Wednesday.
